Freebird Games is a Canadian indie game development studio founded by Kan "Reives" Gao. The studio is best known for their narrative-driven RPG-like games, the most acclaimed ones being To the Moon and Finding Paradise. The studio was created as a personal outlet for Kan to "tell stories through the form of interactive narratives and music".[1]
History[]
Freebird Games started as a personal project made by Kan Gao. Later the team expanded to include help from Jessica M. Vázquez, James Q. Zhang (retired), Gabriela Aprile, and Lannie Neely III. Kan himself contributes much of the work that goes to the games as the director, story writer and musician. He also commissions various talents for the development of some aspects of the game, such as the artwork.
The first game developed by Freebird Games is Quintessence: The Blighted Venom, an unfinished free role-playing game series. Their second free game Do You Remember My Lullaby? was released on December 21, 2008. On June 20, 2009 they released a free demo of an upcoming release titled Lyra's Melody - The Song She Whispered to Me. In 2011, shortly before the release of To The Moon, they released their first full game The Mirror Lied for free. It is described as an abstract short story.
Their first commercial release and the first installment of Sigmund Corp. series, To the Moon, was released on November 1, 2011. It turned out to be a commercial success and received positive reviews. To the Moon's first minisode was released in late 2013, followed by a prequel to the next major installment, A Bird Story in November 2014. The second To the Moon minisode was released in early 2015. The next major installment in the Sigmund Corp series, Finding Paradise, was released on December 14, 2017 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It also received positive reviews. Freebird's next and most recent game, Impostor Factory, was released on September 30, 2021.[2]
